SRM Campagnolo Powermeter Crankset Info

The Belgian Lotto-Soudal team works, in part, as testers for SRM.  The WorldTour squad has its share of classics victories, national champion, points, leaders, climbers jerseys, and so on.  As they ride thousands of kilometers every year, both racing and training, they are the perfect guinea pigs for testing things like powermeters: their job depends on such tools.  It was the team’s input that has helped the SRM Campagnolo Four-Bolt Powermeter become the remarkable tool it is.

The first thing to know is that, as with all of SRM’s products, they make the gold standard in terms of accuracy and durability. Not only is the accuracy +/- 1%, but the internals are sealed inside a spider that has been glued together and can only be opened up by SRM.  It’s waterproof, and will remain that way.  The life of the battery is approximately 1900 hours, which, if you ride ten hours a week, will last about 3.6 years.

And, as with all SRM’s, the crank functions like a normal crank.  The chainrings are standard Campagnolo.  They’re torqued to spec at the factory.  So long as you keep the same rings, or replace with the same size rings, and torque the crank bolts to their recommended specification, the calibration never needs to be checked.  If you switch chainring sizes, you’ll need to check, but it’s a fairly straightforward procedure.

In terms of installation, this crank installs like any other Campagnolo crank.  Between removal of your old crank and installation of this one, you’ll want to mount a magnet to your frame.  The magnet turns on the electronics inside the crank when the crank starts to spin.  As a result, a magnet kit is included-two neodymium (aka rare earth) magnets, one of which sits between the bottom bracket shell and the cable guides and one that is in a plastic housing and mounts via 3M double-stick adhesive.  Choose the one that works better with your frame.  Clean the frame before mounting magnets, as it will help them stick to your bike better.  In case you get it wrong, extra adhesive is included.

The crank is available in different lengths and chainring combinations-standard road, mid-compact, and compact.  Choose the one that best reflects your riding.

The SRM Campagnolo Powermeter Four-Bolt crankset comes with the crankset and the magnet kit.  How you use and abuse it is up to you.  Don’t worry: it has taken worse than you can ever dish out.
