Shimano SH-RX801 Shoes - Wide Info

The Shimano SH-RX801 Shoes - Wide bring race-level stiffness to riders who need more room through the forefoot without giving up power transfer. Shimano built the wide version with extra volume throughout the toe box and midfoot, so the fit opens up without changing what the shoe is designed to do: put down power efficiently on long gravel efforts. The carbon composite sole rates 10 on Shimano's 12-point stiffness scale, landing closer to the S-Phyre road line than Shimano's mountain bike shoes, and it pairs with TPU lugs at the sole for grip and walkability when you're off the bike pushing through a hike-a-bike section or standing around at a checkpoint.

A low-profile BOA Li2 dial handles the primary closure, letting you make small tension adjustments mid-ride without stopping to fuss with laces or velcro. Shimano backs that up with a secondary strap lower on the shoe, which lets you dial in toe box fit independently from the rest of the upper — useful for riders whose feet need different pressure through the front versus the midfoot. The synthetic leather upper carries perforated ventilation to manage heat on long, hot gravel days, and Shimano's DYNALAST construction shapes the toe-spring section of the sole to smooth out the upstroke through the pedal cycle, which matters over hours in the saddle more than it does on a short ride.

Reinforced toe protection and a wider heel contact area with a stabilizer round out the shoe, both aimed at the reality of gravel riding: rougher surfaces, occasional off-bike scrambling, and terrain that doesn't always cooperate with a pure road setup. This is a shoe for gravel racers and gran fondo riders who want a stiff, efficient platform on the bike but still need to walk comfortably when the terrain forces a dismount. The wide fit specifically serves riders who've found standard gravel shoes too narrow through the forefoot without wanting to sacrifice the stiffness a race-focused shoe demands. Available in sizes 40 through 46.

The RA Perspective

We like the RX801 for riders who've been squeezed by standard-width gravel shoes but still want a genuinely stiff platform, not a compromise. The wide last gives real room through the forefoot without turning the shoe soft or vague underfoot — it still feels like a race shoe, just one that fits.

On the bike, the carbon sole transfers power cleanly on long climbs and sustained efforts, and the BOA Li2 dial makes on-the-fly adjustments easy when your feet swell over a long ride. The secondary toe-box strap is a nice touch for wide-footed riders specifically, since it lets you fine-tune pressure up front independent of the rest of the fit.

Where it's less convincing is walkability. The sole is stiff enough that it does fine on smooth dismounts and short walks, but it's not a shoe we'd recommend for a lot of hike-a-bike on loose or rocky terrain — the tread pattern is minimal and the sole doesn't flex much underfoot. If your gravel routes involve regular off-bike scrambling, that's worth knowing going in.

We'd steer this toward gravel racers and gran fondo riders with wider feet who want race stiffness without a narrow fit, and who aren't expecting a hiking shoe when they're off the bike.
