Shimano SH-RX801 Shoes Info

The Shimano SH-RX801 Shoes are built for race-ready gravel riding, anchored by a lightweight carbon composite sole rated a 10 on Shimano's 12-point stiffness scale — a rating that puts these gravel shoes closer to Shimano's road race lineup than its mountain bike shoes. That stiffness translates directly into power transfer, so effort at the pedal loses less energy to flex in the sole, which matters most over long gravel races and gran fondos where every watt counts.

Shimano's DYNALAST technology shapes the toe-spring section of the sole to smooth out the upstroke, reducing energy loss through a more natural pedal stroke. Off the bike, high-grip TPU lugs are placed at key traction points across a wider contact area, and a built-in heel stabilizer adds control when you're off and walking a technical section. The tread is shallower than Shimano's XC mountain bike shoes, striking a balance between pedaling efficiency and the off-bike stability gravel riding demands.

The upper is synthetic leather, shaped to wrap the foot for a fit that holds its shape ride after ride, while a low-profile BOA® Li2 dial handles microadjustments on the fly. A separate strap across the toe box lets you dial in forefoot fit independently of the rest of the shoe. The Shimano SH-RX801 comes in Black across sizes 40 through 48, including half sizes, and it's built for gravel racers and gran fondo riders who want a shoe that performs on the bike without giving up much when the terrain forces you off it.

The RA Perspective

The RX801 rides like Shimano brought its road racing philosophy to a gravel shoe. The stiffness is immediately noticeable — on sustained gravel climbs or long stretches at threshold, there's very little flex to rob your effort, which is exactly what riders chasing gravel race results are looking for.

The DYNALAST toe-spring shaping is subtle but real. It smooths out the top of the pedal stroke in a way that's easy to miss consciously but noticeable if you go back to a stiffer, more traditional sole afterward. Off the bike, the shoe walks better than most race-stiff options thanks to the heel stabilizer and wider contact patch, though it's still not going to feel like a hiking shoe on a long hike-a-bike section.

One thing worth knowing before you order: several riders have found the RX801 runs a touch snug compared to other Shimano shoes, so if you're between sizes, it's worth sizing up rather than down.

We'd recommend this one for gravel racers and gran fondo riders who spend most of their time in the saddle and want maximum power transfer, rather than bikepackers who expect to be off the bike and walking for long stretches.
