Scott Scale 970 Bike Info

The Scott Scale 970 Bike is the entry point into a race lineage that's actually raced at the highest level — riders like Nino Schurter have taken Scott Scale bikes to World Cup wins, and while the 970 is built to a more accessible price than that team-issue carbon, it carries the same hardtail cross country geometry and race-first intent. This is a bike built to be light, direct, and fast on smooth-to-moderately-rough singletrack, not a do-everything trail bike wearing a race bike's name.

The frame is Scott's Scale Alloy, built from custom-butted 6061 tubing with Boost spacing at the rear (141x5mm QR), a tapered head tube, and a BB92 bottom bracket shell. Internal cable routing keeps the lines clean, and a replaceable derailleur hanger means a trailside crash doesn't necessarily end your ride or cost you a frame. As a hardtail, there's no rear suspension by design — the frame's own flex and the fork up front are doing the compliance work, which keeps the bike lighter and more efficient at transferring pedal power into forward motion, exactly what cross country racing rewards.

Up front is a RockShox Judy Silver TK Solo Air fork with 100mm of travel, a tapered steerer, rebound adjustment, and a lockout lever. 100mm is a deliberately modest amount of travel for a mountain fork — enough to take the edge off rock gardens and roots without adding weight or flex that would slow the bike down on smoother sections. The lockout lets you firm the fork up entirely for fire roads or paved sections between trailheads.

Shifting comes from a SRAM SX Eagle 12-speed groupset — a single-ring 1x setup with a 32-tooth crank and a 10-50t cassette, which covers a wide enough gear range to handle sustained climbs without needing a front derailleur to complicate things. SX Eagle sits at the entry point of SRAM's mountain lineup, which means simpler, more affordable maintenance and parts availability if something needs replacing down the line. Braking comes from Shimano MT200 hydraulic disc brakes with 180mm front and 160mm rear rotors, a dependable, easy-to-service setup rather than anything exotic.

The Scale 970 rolls on 29-inch wheels — Syncros rims on Formula hubs — wrapped in Maxxis Rekon Race tires in a 2.25" width, a tread pattern built for rolling speed and predictable cornering on typical XC race courses rather than deep mud or loose rock. The rest of the finishing kit, including the stem, handlebar, seatpost, and grips, comes from Syncros, Scott's in-house component brand, which keeps the whole build cohesive and keeps costs down compared to sourcing name-brand parts individually.

This is the right bike for someone getting into cross country racing or fast hardtail riding who wants genuine race geometry and a light, efficient frame without paying for a carbon frame and premium groupset on their first serious mountain bike. It's not built for aggressive trail riding or big drops — for that, look further up Scott's lineup or toward a bike with more suspension travel. For smooth-to-moderate singletrack and race courses, though, the 970 delivers the Scale's core character at a price that makes sense for a first race bike.

The RA Perspective

We like the Scale 970 as a first race-oriented hardtail rather than a general trail bike, and it's worth being clear-eyed about that going in. The alloy frame and 100mm RockShox fork are tuned for efficiency on rolling, moderately technical terrain — this isn't the bike for chunky enduro trails or big drops.

The SRAM SX Eagle drivetrain is the right call at this price point. It's not the lightest or smoothest-shifting groupset in SRAM's lineup, but it's simple, durable, and easy to find parts for at almost any shop, which matters more than marginal weight savings on a bike aimed at newer racers.

The tradeoff we'd flag is the Shimano MT200 brakes and entry-level wheel package — both do the job reliably, but riders who move up to more technical terrain or start pushing harder into descents may eventually want to upgrade rotors or wheels before anything else on this build.

We'd recommend this to someone stepping into cross country racing for the first time, or a rider who wants a genuinely quick hardtail for fitness rides and local XC courses without spending carbon-frame money. It's an honest, well-specced way into the Scale name without the premium price tag.
