Oakley Kato Glasses Info

The Oakley Kato Glasses are as technically serious as they look. Launched in 2021 and made famous by Mark Cavendish — who wore them while tying Eddy Merckx's record of 34 Tour de France stage wins — the Kato's distinctive mask-like design isn't a styling exercise. The frameless, high-wrap shield is engineered to conform to the contours of the face, delivering one of the widest unobstructed fields of vision available in performance cycling eyewear. This version pairs the Polished Black frame with Prizm Sapphire lenses, optimized for full-sun conditions with 12 percent light transmission.

At 34 grams, the Kato barely registers on the face. The O-Matter frame material keeps weight low while maintaining the structural integrity needed to hold the progressive lens wrap in place through hours of hard riding. Unobtainium nose pads — Oakley's hydrophilic grip material — come in three sizes so you can dial in the fit to your nose shape, and they grip harder as you sweat rather than slipping. An air channel built into the top of the lens directs airflow between the lens and face to prevent fogging, and the frameless design allows enough ventilation that misting during efforts or cooler climbs isn't a concern.

The lens tilt is adjustable via an O-ring clasp that allows up to 30 degrees of pivot — useful for customizing how close the lens sits to the cheek or creating additional airflow if needed. Prizm Sapphire is a mirror lens that excels in high-brightness conditions: the 12 percent light transmission cuts glare on sun-soaked roads, while Oakley's HDO (High Definition Optics) system maintains precise optical clarity with 100% UV protection across the entire lens surface.

Design Benefits

  1. Field of vision that's genuinely wider. The high-wrap frameless shield eliminates the frame intrusion you get with conventional cycling glasses. Looking down on the hoods or riding aggressively on the drops, you'll frequently forget you're wearing them.
  2. Prizm Sapphire cuts glare without sacrificing clarity. At 12% light transmission, these are built for bright days. The Prizm filter fine-tunes color wavelengths rather than simply darkening everything — contrast and detail hold up where standard tints flatten them.
  3. Unobtainium gets a better grip when you sweat. Most nose pad materials slip under moisture. Unobtainium does the opposite, which matters in a summer road race or a long August ride when the frame would otherwise shift every few minutes.
  4. Adjustable rake fine-tunes fit without tools. The O-ring tilt mechanism lets you adjust how the lens sits against your face for airflow and comfort — useful if the standard position isn't quite right for your face shape.

The RA Perspective

The Kato is one of those pieces of kit that generates real conversation at the shop. The design is unmistakable — Cavendish wore these for his record-tying 2021 Tour stage wins, and the connection stuck. But beyond the history, these are genuinely among the best-performing sunglasses we carry for road riding.

The field of vision is the first thing you notice. There's no frame cutting into your sightline, and the lens wraps far enough around the face that you're not fighting the edges when you look into a corner or check over your shoulder. For riders used to more conventional cycling glasses, the difference is immediately noticeable.

The Prizm Sapphire version is our recommendation for riders doing a lot of summer riding in direct sun. Twelve percent light transmission is on the lower end — these aren't for overcast days — but in full sun they're exceptional. Glare drops sharply and the Prizm optics keep contrast where you need it: road textures, shadows, cracks, and debris read clearly rather than washing out in harsh light.

The fit does reward some patience with the nose pads. Oakley includes three sizes, and spending a few minutes finding the right one makes a real difference in stability. We'd also note that the Kato fits best on wider faces with a higher nose bridge — if you're between sizes or have a narrower face, we'd recommend trying them before committing. But for riders who fit them well, these are hard to beat.
