The Lightweight Meilenstein ART Schwarz Edition Disc Brake Wheelset is the product of four years spent rethinking what a carbon road wheel can be. It weighs 1,190 grams. Its rims are 45mm deep. It spins on CeramicSpeed bearings and rolls on 20 full-carbon spokes that run in one continuous line from rim to rim without a single bend or mechanical connector. The engineering behind those numbers is why this wheelset exists at $8,500 — and why it sits at the top of Lightweight's lineup as their most technically advanced wheel to date.
The structural foundation is Alpha Rib Technology (ART), a patented construction method that departs entirely from the hollow shell geometry used in conventional carbon rims. Instead of a simple hollow profile, ART integrates a network of carbon ribs inside the rim cavity. These internal ribs dramatically increase lateral stiffness by reinforcing the rim wall against side loads — the forces generated in hard cornering, crosswinds, and out-of-the-saddle efforts. The ribs also create the anchoring structure for the spokes. In a conventional wheel, carbon spokes must bend at the spoke bed, and those bends are stress concentrations that accumulate fatigue over thousands of cycles. With ART, spokes bond directly into the rib architecture, following the natural load path of the carbon fibers without redirection. The result is greater tensile strength, reduced material fatigue, and a connection between hub and rim that transmits force with less energy loss. The internal rib geometry is made possible by Reusable Core Technology — a precision-engineered removable core that defines the rim's internal structure during the carbon layup and curing process, then gets extracted and recycled for the next build.
The 20 spokes follow Lightweight's R2R (Rim-to-Rim) design: each one a single continuous carbon fiber running from rim to rim, passing through the Penta-Fly hub without interruption. There are no end caps, no mechanical attachments, no directional changes. The Penta-Fly hub itself is built around DT Swiss EXP 180 internals, with oversized flanges that maximize lateral and torsional stiffness at the point where braking forces and acceleration loads enter the wheel. The hub body is kept compact to minimize aerodynamic drag. The rim profile — 45mm deep, 22.9mm internal width, 28.6mm external — is designed specifically for 28mm and wider tires, tuning the aerodynamic system of the tire-and-rim together rather than optimizing for narrow tires around which no serious road rider builds a race setup anymore.
The Schwarz Edition differs from the standard Meilenstein ART in two specific ways. CeramicSpeed bearings replace the standard steel bearings throughout — rolling with less friction, running quieter at speed, and requiring less frequent service under race conditions. And where the standard version carries silver decals, the Schwarz Edition uses black logos on a smooth matte-black carbon finish that gives the wheel a deliberately understated appearance. The smooth finish itself is a departure from Lightweight's traditional visible carbon weave, reflecting the advances in the manufacturing process and lending the Meilenstein ART a distinctly modern look. Both versions are handcrafted in Friedrichshafen, Germany, backed by a five-year warranty, and rated to a 120 kg maximum system weight.
The Meilenstein ART Schwarz Edition is built for riders who understand that at this price point, the differences between wheelsets are structural, not cosmetic. Alpha Rib Technology represents a genuine engineering advance — a solution to spoke bonding and rim stiffness that does not exist in any other production wheel. Add CeramicSpeed bearings, 20 continuous-fiber spokes, and handcrafted German manufacturing, and the Schwarz Edition makes a compelling case as the most complete disc road wheelset currently available. If you're riding at a level where these details determine outcomes, this is where the ceiling is.
