Lake MX333-X Shoes Info

The Lake MX333-X is Lake's flagship mountain bike shoe built for riders with wider feet who refuse to trade performance for comfort. Constructed on the MX Race Last in Wide width, it delivers the close-fitting, high-cadence geometry Lake designed for XC racing — tight heel pocket, narrower toe profile than the Competition last — while giving the forefoot the room it needs to ride without restriction. The result is a race-oriented shoe that wide-footed mountain bikers can actually stay in for a full day in the saddle. The upper is Clarino Microfiber, a lightweight and breathable material that keeps weight down without sacrificing durability on technical terrain.

Lake built the MX333 around the same Thermaform technology found in their flagship CX403 road shoe. The internal Thermaform Carbon Fiber heel counter is heat-moldable — soften it with a standard oven and the carbon conforms to your specific heel geometry, eliminating heel slip and the energy loss that comes with it. A Carbitex Medial Support panel reinforces the midfoot for stiffness under power, while Outlast temperature-regulating lining at the heel and tongue manages heat actively rather than simply wicking moisture. The outsole combines a 100% carbon fiber plate for stiffness with a rubber off-road patterned sole for traction across mixed terrain, and TPU lugs are positioned for optional toe spikes — a detail that matters when conditions get loose or muddy.

Closure is handled by BOA's Li2 dials, the most advanced dial hardware in cycling, offering bidirectional micro-adjustment and long-term abrasion resistance. A plush leather tongue provides a buffer against the closure system's secure hold over extended rides.

Design Benefits

  1. Race Last in Wide — XC-racing geometry where it counts — heel and arch — with the forefoot volume wide-footed riders need. No more choosing between a race shoe that fits the heel or a comfort shoe that fits the forefoot.
  2. Heat-moldable heel counter — Thermaform Carbon Fiber technology drawn from Lake's CX403 flagship. A custom heel fit eliminates slip, improves power transfer, and reduces the localized fatigue that builds up over technical climbs.
  3. Carbitex + carbon outsole — The medial support panel stiffens the midfoot under pedaling load while the carbon/rubber outsole delivers road-shoe stiffness with enough off-road traction to stay planted on loose and technical terrain.
  4. Toe spike provision — TPU lugs are positioned to accept optional toe spikes, making the MX333-X adaptable for wet roots, loose gravel, and cyclocross-style conditions where grip at dismounts matters.

The RA Perspective

The MX333-X answers a question we hear regularly at the shop: is there a serious XC race shoe for riders with wide feet? Most performance MTB shoes are built narrow, and the options for wide-footed riders tend to skew toward trail or enduro categories where fit tolerances are looser. The MX Race Last in Wide keeps all the geometry that makes the MX333 fast — tight heel, controlled volume through the arch — and adds meaningful forefoot width without softening the performance character.

The Thermaform heel counter is worth calling out specifically. It's the same technology Lake uses in the CX403, which sits at the top of their road lineup. Heat molding it to your heel takes about twenty minutes and makes a noticeable difference in how the shoe feels on the bike — the heel stays put, the foot doesn't rock, and you stop losing energy to micro-movements over sustained climbs.

The Clarino Microfiber upper is the right call for a performance MTB shoe. It's lighter than leather, holds up against brush and rock rub, and the Outlast lining at the heel and tongue keeps the interior from turning into a furnace on hot summer rides. The rubber patterned outsole and TPU toe lugs give you real grip when you're walking up loose terrain or shouldering the bike — the carbon plate underneath keeps things stiff when you're clipped in and putting down power.

For a wide-footed XC racer or aggressive trail rider who wants a Lake-quality fit without compromising on performance, the MX333-X is the shoe we'd start with.
