Lake CX400 Shoes - Regular Info

The Lake CX400 Shoes bring back one of Lake's most celebrated performance platforms — refined, streamlined, and purpose-built for competitive road cycling. Where the original CX400 was known for its heat-moldable fit, this evolution takes a different direction: a race-last construction that's anatomically correct from the first ride, no oven required. The result is a pro-caliber road shoe that fits immediately and holds its shape long-term.

At the core of the CX400 is Lake's CX/TX RACE last, the most performance-oriented shape in the Lake lineup. It runs narrower through the toe box and tighter in the heel than Lake's Competition last, with less overall volume than the Sport last. That translates to a secure, close-fitting feel designed for high-cadence efforts where foot movement inside the shoe costs you watts. If you've found wider-lasted road shoes feel imprecise at threshold, the RACE last is worth your attention.

The sole is a full carbon fiber construction, engineered to maximize power transfer while allowing just enough flex where the foot naturally bends during the pedal stroke. Unlike heat-moldable soles that require customization to achieve optimal stiffness, this carbon chassis adapts to the rider's foot over time on its own terms — delivering race-level efficiency straight out of the box. The Clarino microfiber upper reinforces that efficiency with a material that behaves like premium leather: supple, form-fitting, and resistant to stretching under load. Strategically placed perforations keep airflow moving through longer efforts without compromising the structural integrity that holds your foot in place. The fit remains consistent ride after ride.

Closure is handled by a dual BOA Li2 system — two independent Push/Pull dials that allow precise, zone-specific tension adjustment. Whether you're dialing in for a long training ride or tightening down before a crit, the Li2 mechanism gives you micro-adjustable control without stopping to fiddle with buckles or straps. Available in White/Black and Black/White, in regular width, sizes 39–50.

Design Benefits

  1. Race last geometry — the CX/TX RACE last's narrow, low-volume shape keeps the foot locked in position during high-cadence efforts, reducing energy loss from foot movement inside the shoe
  2. Carbon sole, no customization required — full carbon construction delivers immediate race-level stiffness without the heat-molding process; the sole naturally conforms over time
  3. Clarino microfiber upper — resists stretch under sustained load while offering the comfort and pliability of natural leather; perforations manage heat during long efforts
  4. Dual BOA Li2 system — two independent dials allow precise, zone-specific fit adjustment on the fly without stopping

The CX400 suits riders who know exactly what they want from a road cycling shoe: a snug, consistent fit, a stiff platform, and no fuss. It's a shoe for those who ride hard enough to feel the difference.

The RA Perspective

We've always had a soft spot for Lake at RA Cycles — they're one of the few brands that actually thinks seriously about fit as a starting point, not an afterthought. The CX400 is a good example of that philosophy applied to a race shoe.

What stands out immediately is how settled the fit feels right out of the box. A lot of race-lasted shoes need a few rides before they stop feeling punishing, but the Clarino upper on the CX400 has a suppleness to it from the start. It molds to your foot in the way good leather does, without the stiffness and break-in period you get with stiffer synthetic materials. The perforations do real work on summer rides — we've put this shoe through long days in the saddle and it stays notably cooler than shoes with less ventilation.

The RACE last is worth understanding before you order. It's Lake's most precise fit, designed for narrower feet with a slimmer midfoot and tighter heel. Riders who've always found cycling shoes a little boxy up front will appreciate it. If you're coming from a shoe with a wider platform and you're not sure, use the size chart and measure carefully — this is a shoe that rewards riders who take the fitting process seriously.

The dual BOA setup is well-executed. Two dials gives you real zone control: you can run the lower dial snugger through the midfoot and back off slightly on the toe box if you tend to swell on longer rides. It's the kind of detail that matters on a four-hour day.

At $449.99, the CX400 sits at a serious price point. It delivers serious performance in return — a carbon sole, premium upper materials, and a race-specific last that's hard to find from other brands without going custom. For riders who spend real time in the saddle and want their equipment to keep pace, it earns its place on the rack.
