Cervelo Aspero-5 GRX Di2 Bike Info

Cervelo built the Cervelo Aspero-5 GRX Di2 Bike with one goal: to be the fastest gravel race bike on the planet. That's not marketing — the Aspero-5 debuted at the UCI Gravel World Championship, and Cervelo's wind tunnel data backs the claim: the updated frame is 37 watts faster than the outgoing Aspero and 34 watts faster than its nearest competitor. It's also 66 grams lighter than its predecessor, despite greater aerodynamic surface area throughout. When a faster bike is also a lighter bike, that's not a coincidence — it's the result of a complete aerodynamic and structural redesign from the ground up.

The Aspero-5 introduces a mixed tire geometry approach that gives riders a meaningful choice between two performance modes. Run equal-size tires — 42mm front and rear — for stable, confident handling on technical courses. Or run a 4mm differential (40mm front, 44mm rear) to optimize aerodynamic clearance at the front wheel while keeping traction at the rear, a setup Cervelo's aero team identified as meaningfully faster on open courses. The carbon Aspero-5 fork is engineered to accommodate either configuration within the bike's 45mm maximum clearance. The 422.5mm chainstay runs consistent across all six sizes, keeping handling character predictable regardless of frame size.

Internal downtube storage — borrowed directly from Cervelo's P-Series triathlon platform — adds functional real estate without disrupting the aerodynamic profile. Tools, a tube, CO2: it all disappears inside the frame. A Cervelo Smartpak top tube bag and front computer mount round out the on-bike storage system for longer efforts. This is a gravel race bike that can also handle a full day in the saddle without making you choose between speed and practicality.

The GRX Di2 build wraps the Aspero-5 carbon chassis in a component package that punches well above the bike's price point. The crankset is a Shimano GRX RX820 with an integrated 4iiii Precision GEN3+ power meter — a power meter that ships as part of the bike, not an upgrade you source separately. A Wolf Tooth 48T Aero chainring pairs with Shimano's XTR M9200 10-51T cassette, giving you a range that handles both sustained power efforts and genuine technical climbing without compromise. The GRX RX827 Di2 rear derailleur manages shifts via GRX RX825 Di2 levers with the precision and reliability Shimano's electronic platform is known for.

Reserve's 40/44TA GR carbon wheels — 40mm deep up front, 44mm deep at the rear — are built on DT Swiss 350 hubs and mirror the mixed-depth approach that complements the Aspero-5's aero geometry. Vittoria Corsa Pro Control TLR G2.0 tires in 700x42 ship tubeless-ready. Cervelo's own HB16 carbon bar and ST31 carbon stem complete an integrated cockpit engineered to contribute the roughly 6 watts of aero savings Cervelo attributes to the front-end package.

Design Benefits

  1. 37W aero advantage over the outgoing Aspero — A complete aerodynamic redesign, not an incremental update, that also sheds 66 grams despite greater aero surface area.
  2. Mixed tire geometry — Run 42/42 for technical course handling or 40/44 (front/rear) for maximum aerodynamic efficiency on open terrain. The frame and fork are designed for both.
  3. Integrated 4iiii power meter — Ships on the bike. No post-purchase installation, no compatibility concerns — a race-caliber power meter at no additional cost.
  4. Asymmetric Reserve 40/44TA GR wheels — Shallower front for crosswind stability and compliance, deeper rear for straight-line aerodynamic efficiency — matched to the bike's geometry intent.
  5. XTR 10-51T cassette — Mountain bike range on a race-oriented gravel bike. The 48T Wolf Tooth chainring and 51T low gear combination handles the full spectrum of gravel terrain without a compromised high end.
  6. Downtube storage — Triathlon-derived internal storage keeps repair essentials accessible without adding drag or loading the cockpit with bags.

Final Take

The Cervelo Aspero-5 GRX Di2 is the build for the rider who races gravel or wants a bike that's been designed and validated at the sport's highest level. At $8,850, the integrated power meter, Reserve carbon wheels, and Shimano's top electronic gravel groupset make the value case straightforward. The frame is Cervelo's fastest gravel platform ever — and the GRX Di2 build puts it within reach without stepping up to SRAM pricing.

The RA Perspective

The Aspero-5 showed up at the UCI Gravel World Championship. That's Cervelo's proof of concept for this bike — not a marketing claim, but a race result. The 37-watt aero improvement over the outgoing Aspero isn't a number Cervelo pulled from a press release; it came out of the same wind tunnel process they use for their road and triathlon platforms.

What I think is underappreciated about this particular build is the power meter situation. The GRX RX820 crank ships with a 4iiii Precision GEN3+ power meter already installed. At this price point that's expected, but it's still worth saying: you're not sourcing a power meter separately, not dealing with installation, not checking compatibility. It's there, it's calibrated, and it works with GRX Di2 natively. For a rider coming from a bike without power data, that changes the way you train immediately.

The mixed tire geometry idea is genuinely useful. Most gravel riders run the same tire size front and rear out of habit, but Cervelo's aero team found that a 4mm front-rear differential (40mm front, 44mm rear) is meaningfully faster on open courses. The Aspero-5 fork is built to accommodate it. Run 42s all around for rough courses; drop to a 40mm front on the road-heavy stuff. It's a small detail that adds real flexibility.

The Reserve 40/44 wheel pairing mirrors the same logic — shallower front for crosswind management, deeper rear for straight-line speed. DT Swiss 350 hubs underneath are reliable, serviceable, and not going to cause you problems in the field.

If you're racing gravel at any level, this is the bike.
