3T Extrema Italia GRX Di2 Bike Info
The 3T Extrema Italia GRX Di2 Bike is 3T's most capable gravel machine — built for the longest days, the most technical terrain, and the kind of riding where a gravel race bike runs out of capability before you do. It sits at the extreme end of 3T's Italia lineup: above the RaceMax (mixed tarmac and gravel racing) and well above the Strada (road-focused), purpose-built around tire clearances and geometry that no pure race bike can match. With 57mm maximum tire clearance, a 10-51T cassette borrowed from Shimano's mountain bike catalog, and a fork rated to carry 3kg per side in cargo, the Extrema Italia is a drop-bar bike designed to go places where most drop-bar bikes stop.
Like the Strada Italia and RaceMax Italia, the Extrema Italia is handmade in Bergamo, Italy using 3T's proprietary filament-winding and RTM manufacturing process. Dry carbon fiber yarn is applied continuously through automated winding machines into heated resin-transfer molds — a process that gives 3T precise control over fiber angles, eliminates excess resin, and allows the frame's layup to be tuned specifically for the Extrema's demands rather than adapted from a road race template. The frame weighs 1,099 grams in size 54; the fork adds 420 grams. That fork — the 3T Fango Extrema Integrale — carries triple-bolt cage mounts on each leg, rated to 3kg of load per side, purpose-built for bikepacking accessories, front racks, and cage systems that keep mass forward and stable on loaded routes. The seatpost is a 27.2mm round section, which accepts wireless dropper posts — a fitment 3T explicitly recommends for the descents this bike can handle. The bike's "3Touring" geometry runs a relaxed 70.5° head angle and a 436mm chainstay in size 54, prioritizing long-day stability and all-day comfort over race-aggressive positioning.
Shimano GRX Di2 RX827 handles shifting wirelessly in 1x12 configuration. The rear derailleur pairs a 40-tooth chainring against a Shimano Deore XT 10-51T cassette — a gear range more commonly associated with full-suspension mountain bikes than drop-bar bikes, and deliberately chosen to match the terrain the Extrema is designed to cover. Fully wireless, with no cable housing threading through the frame. 3T's Discus 45|40 LTD carbon wheels run asymmetric rim depths — 45mm front, 40mm rear — with a 29mm internal width engineered to support wide tires properly. Continental Terra Adventure 700x55c tires come standard, tubeless-ready and sized to run at low pressures that turn rough, loose gravel into manageable terrain rather than something to absorb.
Design Benefits
- 57mm Tire Clearance Redefines What a Drop-Bar Bike Can Do. Most gravel bikes top out at 40-45mm. The Extrema Italia was engineered from the ground up around 47-57mm WAM (Width As Measured) tires — that's the design target, not the theoretical maximum. Continental Terra Adventure 55s at tubeless pressures produce a ride character that absorbs rough gravel, loose terrain, and sustained dirt roads with genuine grip and control. The frame and fork architecture are shaped around this tire width, not stretched to accommodate it.
- 10-51T Cassette Means the Terrain Sets the Limit. Shimano's Deore XT 10-51T cassette is a mountain bike component on a drop-bar platform — and it's the right choice here. Paired with a 40-tooth chainring, it delivers a bail-out gear for loaded climbs on rough terrain that no conventional road cassette can match, while the 40x10 top gear is more than sufficient for sustained paved descents. The GRX Di2 RX827 wireless rear derailleur manages that range smoothly and reliably under load, without the cable housing complexity of a mechanical system.
- The Fork Is Built for Adventure, Not Just Riding Through It. The 3T Fango Extrema Integrale isn't a standard gravel fork with a couple of cage mounts bolted on. Triple-bolt mounts on each leg — rated to 3kg per side — are integrated into the fork's carbon construction for real cargo capacity. Front bags, cage systems, and rack adapters all mount without modification. Combined with the 27.2mm round seatpost that accepts wireless dropper posts, the Extrema is genuinely ready for extended loaded travel without afterthought additions.
- 3T Discus 45|40 LTD Wheels Are Engineered for This Tire Width. Most aero carbon wheels are built around 23-28mm tires with internal widths of 19-21mm. The Discus 45|40 LTD runs a 29mm internal width that properly supports 50-55mm tire profiles at low tubeless pressures — the geometry is correct for the tire rather than forcing a mismatch. Asymmetric rim depths (45mm front, 40mm rear) reflect how the front and rear wheels interact differently with air and terrain: the deeper rear contributes aerodynamically, the shallower front stays predictable in varied conditions.
Final Take
The Extrema Italia is for riders who want to go further, carry more, and tackle terrain that typical gravel bikes treat as the edge of their capability — without giving up the efficiency and speed that make drop-bar bikes rewarding on the road sections in between. The Italian filament-wound carbon is as good as any in the category. The GRX Di2 wireless drivetrain handles shifting cleanly under sustained effort and load. And the 57mm tire clearance combined with a 10-51T cassette means the terrain decides the limit, not the bike. If your rides regularly involve loading up, riding long, and going somewhere genuinely remote, the 3T Extrema Italia GRX Di2 is the honest answer.
