Shimano Dura-Ace 9270 C60 Disc Wheelset Info

The Shimano Dura-Ace 9270 C60 Disc Wheelset is built for one scenario: flat-out speed on the road. At 60mm deep with a full carbon rim designed to minimize drag across a range of yaw angles, these are Shimano's flagship race wheels — developed for time trialists, triathletes, and criterium riders who want deep-section aerodynamic advantage without sacrificing the lateral stiffness that hard sprint loads demand. They sit at the top of the Dura-Ace R9270 line and reflect the engineering priorities of that groupset: low weight, maximum stiffness, and seamless integration with Shimano's 12-speed drivetrain.

The rim is 60mm deep front and rear, with a 21mm internal width and 28mm external profile. Shimano designed the rim shape to pair efficiently with 25mm to 32mm tires, where the external geometry creates a smooth aerodynamic transition between rim and tire sidewall — a detail that matters for reducing turbulence at speed. The rim is tubeless-ready, so riders can run a tubeless setup with compatible tires and sealant for lower rolling resistance and flat resistance without the weight penalty of a traditional clincher tire-and-tube combination. The rim accepts Centerlock disc rotors and is built around 12mm thru-axle standards — 100mm front, 142mm rear.

Each wheel runs 24 stainless steel bladed spokes, butted to a 2.0-1.8-2.0mm profile and laced straight pull without elbows. The elbow-less design eliminates the J-bend at the hub flange — traditionally a stress concentration point and a source of spoke fatigue in high-tension builds. Shimano uses an OPTBAL lacing pattern on the front wheel: a 2:1 arrangement that places more spokes on the side of the hub where asymmetric geometry would otherwise produce uneven spoke tension. The effect is improved lateral stiffness — the wheel resists flex under hard side loads, which matters when 60mm of carbon rim is generating aerodynamic side forces at race speeds. Wider flange spacing on the hub contributes to the same goal.

The hub shell is cold-forged and machine-finished from aluminum, with an oversized 7075 alloy axle rather than a heavier steel alternative. Bearing friction is addressed through Shimano's Borozon treatment on the steel races — a surface hardening process that produces a precision finish the company's engineers describe as reducing friction at the contact surface. The labyrinth double-contact sealing uses a multi-stage design to block water and contamination from reaching the bearings, a more robust approach than a simple lip seal and one that holds up through training in varied weather over multiple seasons.

Set weight is 751g front and 858g rear — 1,609g complete. For 60mm deep full carbon tubeless rims with alloy hubs, that's a weight figure that reflects the design priority: these wheels are built for speed, not for climbing. The 60mm depth delivers aerodynamic performance on flat courses and in calm conditions, and less so on punchy terrain or in sustained crosswinds. Riders who've spent time on deep-section carbon know how to manage side-wind handling; if the C60 would be your first deep-section wheel, build in some headspace for that learning curve before taking them to a race.

One compatibility point that requires a direct statement: the Shimano Dura-Ace 9270 C60 is compatible with Shimano Road 12-speed drivetrains only. The freehub body is not interchangeable with SRAM XDR, Campagnolo, or Shimano 11-speed setups without a hub replacement. This isn't a limitation unique to the C60 — it's true of the broader Shimano 12-speed wheel line — but it's a factor to confirm before purchasing. If you're building around Dura-Ace Di2 or Ultegra Di2 12-speed, compatibility is straightforward. For anything else, verify first.

At $2,285, the C60 is the aero answer within the Dura-Ace R9270 ecosystem. For a rider already running 12-speed Dura-Ace or Ultegra Di2, adding the matching wheelset completes the system under a single manufacturer's warranty and support structure, and the engineering integration between the freehub body, cassette spacing, and hub geometry is exactly what Shimano designed for. If you race flat courses, time trials, or criteriums on a Shimano 12-speed drivetrain and want the deepest, fastest wheel Shimano makes in a disc format, this is it.

The RA Perspective

The C60 is a wheel that rewards honesty about the conditions you actually race in. If you're doing flat crits, TTs, or triathlons on a Shimano 12-speed drivetrain, these make an enormous amount of sense — 60mm of carbon, Shimano's best hub, tubeless-ready, and fully integrated with the rest of the groupset. That's a compelling package.

The Borozon-treated bearings and labyrinth sealing are details we appreciate. Hub sealing and bearing quality tend to get glossed over on spec sheets, but they matter over the lifespan of a wheel. We've seen plenty of high-end carbon wheels come through our shops with neglected bearings; the double-contact labyrinth design on the Dura-Ace hub holds up better to real-world training use than a simpler sealed bearing approach.

The honest tradeoff: 60mm is deep, and if you ride in areas with variable winds or hilly terrain, there will be days these aren't the right wheel to reach for. The C60 isn't trying to be an all-conditions wheel — it's trying to be the fastest wheel on a flat road in manageable conditions. It does that job well.

The compatibility note matters more than it might seem. This wheelset is Shimano 12-speed Road only. If there's any chance your drivetrain changes, or if you want to move these between bikes, make sure both setups are Shimano 12-speed before committing. For riders fully committed to the Dura-Ace Di2 ecosystem, that's a non-issue. For everyone else, it's worth verifying.
