Zipp 353 NSW Tubeless Disc Wheelset Info

The Zipp 353 NSW Tubeless Disc Wheelset is the most technically advanced road wheelset Zipp makes — and the lightest non-tubular wheelset in their history at 1,255g for the set. Zipp has been building carbon wheels in Indianapolis since 1988, and the 353 NSW is still a handmade product: assembled by builders whose familiarity with the wheel runs alongside the engineers who designed it. The development program logged over 40,000 test miles before the 353 NSW shipped to a single customer, including real-world validation by MOVISTAR TEAM and CANYON//SRAM Racing. The day after the wheelset's introduction, Kasia Niewiadoma rode it to second place at la Flèche Wallonne — one of those results that says more about a build than any lab number.

The rim is built around Zipp's Sawtooth™ profile, which takes structural cues from the tubercles on humpback whale pectoral fins. In the 353 NSW, these become Hyperfoil™ nodes: variable-depth points in the rim's profile that stiffen the cross-section at load-bearing intervals without requiring uniform wall thickness throughout. This allows the carbon to be distributed more efficiently — how Zipp achieves 580g for the front wheel and 675g for the rear while improving impact resistance over the previous generation by more than 16 percent through a revised carbon laminate. The HexFin ABLC dimple pattern across the rim's exterior manages boundary layer airflow at varied wind angles. The 353 NSW is designed to perform in the crosswind conditions that actual road riding delivers, not just in the tunnel at zero yaw.

The hookless tubeless interface is central to Zipp's TSE — Total System Efficiency — philosophy, which frames wheel performance as a system outcome rather than a single variable. TSE identifies four barriers to speed: wind resistance, gravity, rolling resistance, and vibration losses. Hookless rims address the last two. They enable lower operating pressures than hooked designs, which enlarges the tire's deformable contact patch. That contact patch absorbs road surface micro-texture rather than transmitting it as vibration through the wheel — recovering energy that high-pressure narrow setups lose on imperfect pavement. The 25mm internal width is sized specifically for 30mm tires at lower pressures, which Zipp identifies as the TSE sweet spot at road speeds. The maximum rated tire pressure is 73 psi; minimum recommended tire width is 28mm. The 353 NSW is designed for road use — Zipp does not rate it for gravel or off-road riding.

The AXS Wheel Sensor is the first feature of its kind on any Zipp wheelset. The sensor is integrated into the rim itself — not a valve-mounted external device — and communicates real-time tire pressure data to the SRAM AXS app during a ride. On a hookless tubeless system where operating pressure is a primary performance variable, real-time monitoring is practically meaningful: slow leaks become detectable before they affect handling, pre-segment pressure checks require no tools, and post-ride analysis includes pressure data logged alongside other ride metrics. For riders already in the SRAM AXS ecosystem with a connected groupset or power meter, the 353 NSW feeds into the same unified data environment.

The ZR1 SL hub is a new design built specifically for the 353 NSW — not a carryover from a previous Zipp wheelset. Ceramic bearings run throughout, and the freehub delivers 66 points of engagement. The hub runs 30g lighter than its predecessor, contributing directly to the 1,255g total without requiring unusual spoke configurations; 20/20 spoke counts front and rear keep the build conventional and serviceable. The 353 NSW ships in two driver body configurations: HG11 for Shimano and SRAM 11-speed, and XDR for SRAM 12-speed. Campagnolo requires a separately purchased driver body. Centerlock disc rotors are required; lockrings are included.

The RA Perspective

The 353 NSW is one of those wheels where the features that sound like marketing land differently once you understand the engineering behind them. The Sawtooth rim and AXS Wheel Sensor aren't marketing additions — they're the reason this wheel exists. Zipp engineered the 353 NSW to be the best tubeless road wheelset they could build, and every feature has a measurable rationale.

What we tell customers considering the 353 NSW is that the tire pressure monitoring is more useful than it sounds on paper. On a hookless tubeless system, pressure isn't just a comfort variable — it directly affects rolling resistance and the wheel's performance relative to how Zipp designed it. Running 5 psi low because of a slow overnight leak changes the character of the wheel. The AXS Wheel Sensor catches that before it becomes a problem on the road, and over time it gives you a pressure dataset that tells you exactly how your setup behaves across different conditions and temperatures.

The Sawtooth rim is genuinely light in hand. At 1,255g for the pair, they're noticeably easy to accelerate, and running 30mm tubeless tires at appropriate hookless pressures produces a smooth, fast feel on typical road surfaces without any sponginess. The ZR1 SL hub's 66-point engagement is smooth and crisp — this doesn't feel like a hub that's traded reliability for weight.

One honest note for buyers: the 353 NSW is tubeless-only, and hookless at that. If you're not set up for tubeless or you're not committed to running compatible tires, factor that in. And if you need Campagnolo compatibility, you'll need to buy the driver body separately.
