Time Scylon Frameset Info

The Time Scylon Frameset arrived as Time's flagship road racing platform in 2014 and has held that position through two generations. The current Gen 2 version is the result of a full redesign — improved aerodynamics, reduced weight, higher stiffness, and better ride quality compared to the original — built in Time's European factory using a manufacturing process the brand has been refining for more than 30 years.

Time makes frames differently from most brands, and the difference starts at the carbon. Rather than using prepreg sheets — the standard approach in high-end frame manufacturing — Time weaves its own fiber into tubular structures using in-house braiding machines, then forms each section over a shaped wax core and injects resin under heat and pressure. This is Resin Transfer Molding (RTM), and it gives Time tighter control over fiber orientation and resin distribution than prepreg layup allows. The process draws on a blend of 17 different fibers per frame — various carbon types alongside Kevlar, Vectran, and Basalt — each placed where its mechanical properties do the most work. The result is a consistent bond throughout the structure, fewer opportunities for voids to form, and a level of confidence in the end product that Time backs with a lifetime warranty on every frame.

The Scylon's Gen 2 Braided Carbon Structure (BCS) layup combines M46J high-modulus carbon with T800 high-strength fiber. Unlike unidirectional carbon, where fibers run in a single direction through each section, the braided structure interlocks fibers at opposing angles across the tube wall — distributing loads more evenly and resisting the torsional forces that build during hard pedaling efforts. M46J adds the stiffness and snap the frame needs to accelerate efficiently; T800 contributes durability and helps absorb the cumulative fatigue of long days in the saddle. The fork carries the BCS designation as well, with Kevlar reinforcement woven into the layup and a tapered steerer running from 1-1/8" at the crown to 1-1/2" at the head tube junction. The taper stiffens the front end and sharpens steering precision in corners and technical descents.

On the road, the Scylon is built around sprint performance without requiring riders to give up comfort on longer efforts. The tube profiles are shaped for aerodynamic efficiency — Time describes the Gen 2 as an improvement in drag reduction over its predecessor — while the geometry keeps the handling direct without the twitchiness of a pure criterium bike. The 410mm chainstay is consistent across all six sizes (XXS through XL), producing a compact rear end that accelerates cleanly out of corners. Head tube angles run from 71.5° in the smaller sizes to 73° in large and extra-large; seat tube angle holds at 73° throughout. Bottom bracket drop is 67mm across the range. The frame clears 700x32c tires — useful for riders who want compliance on rough pavement or a single chassis that works in all conditions year-round.

The bottom bracket shell is PF 386 EVO, a wide-format press-fit standard that stiffens the drivetrain interface relative to narrower shell designs but requires crankset compatibility confirmation before ordering. Brakes are flat mount front and rear, accepting 140mm rotors as standard or 160mm with an adapter. The headset is FSA No.69 SRS with Time's SRS Topcap, designed to work with both semi-integrated and fully-integrated cockpits so cable routing stays clean regardless of bar choice. The frame is compatible with all current electronic shifting systems and uses standard front and rear derailleur mounts. What comes in the box: front and rear thru axles, the proprietary Scylon aero carbon seatpost (-20/+10mm setback options), a semi-integrated CNC alloy seatpost clamp, the FSA headset, alloy bottle bolts, and front and rear derailleur hangers. Four colorways — Nude, Pearl, Brilliant Red, and Brilliant Purple — are available, along with a Ready to Paint option for riders planning a custom finish.

The RA Perspective

The Scylon is one of those frames that rewards attention. First sprint on one and the response is immediate — not harsh, but precise in a way that tells you the carbon is working exactly as designed. The BCS/RTM process that Time uses produces a stiffness-to-weight ratio that's hard to argue with at this price, and the consistency of in-house carbon manufacturing shows in how the frame behaves under load: predictable, planted, and confidence-inspiring through corners.

The M46J and T800 combination in the layup is worth understanding before you buy. High-modulus carbon is stiffer but more brittle on its own; pairing it with T800 gives the frame better damage tolerance without blunting the acceleration response. In practice, the Scylon feels responsive under sprint loads but doesn't punish you for the road imperfections that accumulate over a long ride.

The PF 386 EVO bottom bracket is worth flagging if you're building this up yourself — it requires specific crankset compatibility, so confirm your crank shell width before ordering. The 32mm tire clearance is a genuine benefit: it opens the frame up for all-weather training without requiring a second bike, and a 30mm tire at modest pressure does more for ride quality on rough pavement than any carbon layup can.

At $4,999, the Scylon competes against capable frames from a lot of well-known brands. What it offers over most of them is the manufacturing process — three decades of in-house RTM expertise and a lifetime warranty that reflects Time's confidence in the outcome. We'd reach for this for a rider who wants a racing frame with serious pedigree and the ride quality to back it up on long days as well as hard ones.
