Mondraker Arid Carbon S Bike Info

The Mondraker Arid Carbon S Bike is the entry-level build in Mondraker's full-carbon gravel range — a range built by a company whose roots are firmly in mountain biking. Mondraker, based in Aspe, Spain, made its name on trail and enduro bikes before entering gravel, and that perspective shapes everything about how the Arid Carbon was engineered. Where many gravel bikes start from road DNA and work backward toward rough terrain, the Arid Carbon starts from a different premise: apply mountain bike design rigor to a fully rigid frame, hold it to the same ISO standards used for Mondraker's trail bikes, then make it work on pavement as well. The result is a gravel bike with a character distinct from anything that started life as a road project.

Stealth Air Carbon: Stiff Where It Matters, Compliant Where It Counts

The frame is built using Stealth Air Carbon, Mondraker's process for engineering each tube and each joint individually based on where stiffness pays off and where compliance does. The bottom bracket shell and headtube area are tuned for lateral rigidity — so power goes to the ground directly and steering stays precise under load. The rear triangle, particularly the seat stays, is tuned for vertical compliance, absorbing trail chatter and road vibration that accumulates over long gravel hours. These qualities feel like opposites in simpler designs; here they coexist because Mondraker treats each section of the frame as a distinct engineering problem rather than a single solution applied everywhere. Supporting details include a UDH (Universal Derailleur Hanger) for shifting precision and easy replacement, a T47 threaded bottom bracket for reliable long-term service, and a 12x142mm thru axle rear end. Maximum tire clearance is 50mm.

Carry-On Storage and Six Bottle Mount Points

The Carry-On system is built into the downtube — three velcro-fastened internal compartments sized for what gravel riders actually carry: a spare tube and tyre levers, a mini pump or CO2 canister, and a multitool. It keeps the silhouette clean and eliminates the need for a frame bag on most rides. Mounting points extend well beyond that: traditional bottle positions in the main triangle, a set under the downtube near the bottom bracket, up to three positions on each fork leg, and threaded bosses on top of the top tube near the headtube. Six usable positions at this price point reflects long-distance thinking rather than afterthought spec.

SRAM Apex XPLR Drivetrain and Component Build

The drivetrain is SRAM Apex XPLR — a 1x12 gravel-specific groupset pairing a 40T X-Sync Eagle chainring against a wide-range PG-1231 11-44 cassette. The XPLR rear derailleur is gravel-specific in design, with a shorter cage and better ground clearance than a standard road derailleur. Braking comes from SRAM Apex hydraulic disc calipers with 160mm Centerline rotors. Wheels are Mavic Allroad — 25mm internal width, hookless and tubeless-ready — wrapped in Maxxis Reaver 700x45 tires with Dual Compound rubber and EXO sidewall protection. The cockpit is all Onoff: a semi-integrated stem at -7 degrees, the S3 GR handlebar with 16-degree flare for a more controlled grip in the drops on rough surfaces, and an S9 Carbon seatpost at 27.2mm. The saddle is a Fizik Vento Argo X5 at 140mm width. Bar tape is Onoff HEX. Pedals are not included.

Forward Geometry Across Five Sizes

The Arid Carbon uses Mondraker's Forward Geometry — a 70-degree head tube angle and 73-degree seat tube angle held consistent across all five sizes: S, M, ML, L, and XL. The ML exists specifically for riders who found size M too small and size L too large. Chainstay length is 425mm across the range, and a 75mm bottom bracket drop keeps the handling balanced without compromising clearance. Available in Mirage Silver and Superblack. The Arid Carbon S is the right starting point for a rider who wants the full Stealth Air Carbon frame, internal cable routing, and Carry-On storage system without moving to a higher build level than the riding actually requires. The bones are shared across the entire Arid Carbon range — the S just asks less of your budget to access them.

The RA Perspective

Mondraker doesn't have a long gravel history, and that's actually what makes the Arid Carbon interesting. They came to gravel with mountain bike engineering instincts — which means they thought hard about compliance versus stiffness in a way that a road-first brand might not bother to. The Stealth Air Carbon process shows it: the rear triangle is genuinely compliant rather than just marketed that way. On rough gravel you feel the difference between a road bike with fat tire clearance and a frame that was actually built to absorb that kind of input.

The Carry-On downtube storage is a practical feature we'd highlight to anyone who's ever done a long gravel day and wished they didn't have to tape a tube to their top tube. Three compartments, sized for real tools, accessible without unpacking the bike. It's a small thing that adds up over a long ride.

At $3,999, the Apex XPLR build is honest about its position. Apex is SRAM's gravel-specific groupset tier — the hydraulic brakes are a real upgrade over mechanical, and the XPLR rear derailleur is properly designed for off-road use rather than adapted from a road design. The Mavic Allroad wheels are a solid foundation: tubeless-ready, hookless, and a 25mm internal width that runs the 700x45 Maxxis Reavers without compromise.

For a rider coming from mountain biking who wants that same mentality in a rigid bike, this is one of the most natural transitions on the market. For a road cyclist looking for their first serious gravel bike, the Arid Carbon S gives you more engineering depth than the price suggests.
