Lake CX242 Shoes Info

The Lake CX242 Shoes exist because most road cycling shoes are designed for average feet, and a lot of riders don't have average feet. Lake built the CX242 around a single idea: fit first, everything else second. The result is a full-performance road shoe with a 100% carbon sole and dual BOA closure that can accommodate bunions, high or low instep, unusual width, or other fit challenges that force riders to compromise on every other shoe they try.

The upper is the defining feature. Rather than a single-piece construction, it's segmented into six independent zones — each one can flex, expand, or conform independently as the BOA dials are tightened. This means pressure can be relieved from sensitive spots without loosening the fit everywhere else. The material is fullgrain leather or Clarino microfiber depending on the colorway, with a NuFoam lining for cushioning and Carbitex support panels woven in to add stability and reinforce the closure. A heat moldable carbon fiber heel counter rounds out the fit system — custom-moldable to your heel shape, it doubles down on heel hold and eliminates the slip that undermines power transfer and causes blisters on long rides.

The last is Lake's CX/TX Competition profile, shaped specifically for high-cadence riding under load. Compared to the Sport last, it has increased toe pitch, more heel lift, and a tighter heel cup — a geometry that keeps the foot locked in position when the pressure is on. The ball girth is slightly wider to account for natural foot expansion during hard efforts, preventing the numbness and hot spots that can develop when a stiff shoe clamps down on a swelling foot.

Design Benefits

  1. Six-zone upper for genuinely adjustable fit: Each zone conforms independently, so you can dial out pressure on a bunion or bony prominence without compromising the snugness everywhere else — something a conventional single-piece upper simply can't do.
  2. Competition Last geometry: The increased toe pitch, heel lift, and tighter heel cup are specifically tuned for high-cadence road riding — keeping the foot positioned optimally when effort and pedaling pressure are at their highest.
  3. Heat moldable heel counter: The carbon heel cup can be shaped to your specific anatomy, eliminating heel lift and creating a locked-in feel that translates directly to better power transfer and less foot fatigue.
  4. Full carbon sole at an accessible price: The Lake Competition carbon sole delivers the same platform stiffness as shoes costing significantly more, making the CX242 a strong option for serious riders who need a fit solution without sacrificing performance.

The RA Perspective

The CX242 is the shoe we reach for when a customer walks in and says they've tried everything. Wide feet, bunions, high instep, asymmetrical foot shapes — we've seen it all, and the CX242 solves more of those problems than any other shoe we stock.

The six-zone upper is the key. It's not just a marketing claim — you can genuinely feel the difference when you tighten the BOA dials. Each section of the upper moves independently, which means you can apply pressure where you need it and back off where you don't. For someone with a bony prominence or a sensitive spot that every other shoe rubs, that's a real solution, not a workaround.

The Competition Last is worth understanding before you buy. It's designed for high-cadence road riding — more toe pitch and heel lift than Lake's Sport last, with a tighter heel cup. That geometry works beautifully on a road bike under load, but it's a different feel than a more neutral last. We always recommend customers try them on if they can, or size carefully using Lake's fit chart.

The heat moldable heel counter makes a meaningful difference. We've had customers come in for a quick molding session and leave noticeably happier with the fit — it takes maybe ten minutes and eliminates most heel slip issues entirely.

At $429.99, the CX242 sits below the CX333-N but doesn't give much up on performance. The carbon sole is genuinely stiff, the BOA system is precise, and the construction quality is exactly what you'd expect from Lake. For riders who've been making do with a shoe that almost fits, this one is worth the conversation.
