Mavic E-Deemax S 27.5 Wheelset Info
The Mavic E-Deemax S 27.5 Wheelset is Mavic's dedicated e-mountain bike wheel, built to handle the extra weight and torque that a motor and battery add to a trail bike rather than adapting a standard MTB wheel to the job. The rim is Maxtal, Mavic's proprietary aluminum alloy, shaped with a 30mm internal width and 22mm depth in an asymmetrical hooked profile that Mavic sizes at 584x30TC. It's tubeless-ready through Mavic's Fore tapeless technology, which seals the rim bed at the spoke holes and removes the need for rim tape — one less point of failure and one less thing to maintain trailside.
At the hub, Mavic uses its Infinity hub design with non-contact spoke lacing paired with an Instant Drive 360 freehub. Instant Drive 360 relies on a large contactless rubber seal rather than a traditional pawl system, so engagement happens essentially the moment you put power through the pedals — noticeable on technical climbs where a motor-assisted bike can put down power abruptly out of a switchback. QRM automatic-preload bearings with C3 clearance keep the hub running smoothly under load, and the wheelset is available with a Shimano MS or SRAM XD freehub body, in either 6-bolt or Center Lock disc mount, with a 15x110mm front axle and 12x148mm Boost rear axle. Twenty-eight straight-pull, extra-flat steel spokes are laced in a crossed-3 pattern front and rear with black brass nipples. The pair comes in at 1,965 grams — 890g front, 1,075g rear — which is not a lightweight number by trail-wheel standards, and that's by design: this wheel is built to carry load, not shave grams.
That load-carrying is the whole point of the E-Deemax S 27.5. Mavic validated the hub to a 180kg total system weight, accounting for bike, rider, and gear, which matters on an e-MTB where the motor and battery already push the bike's own weight well past a standard trail bike before a rider even gets on. The rim's joint is arc-welded and then milled down for a smooth, even finish rather than left with a raised seam, and the rim carries a Black Shield treatment that Mavic says doubles its resistance to impact and scratching. ISM machining removes material from the rim in the areas that don't need it structurally, which is how Mavic keeps the wheel from getting heavier than it has to be while still reinforcing the areas that take the brunt of e-MTB loads and impacts.
On the trail, that combination shows up as a wheel that can take a hard case-to-flat rim strike or a heavy landing without going out of true the way a standard trail wheel might under the added weight and torque of an e-bike. The 30mm internal width supports tire widths in the 52-76mm range (roughly 2.05 to 3.0 inches), and running tubeless at the recommended 36-43 psi maximum lets you drop pressure for grip and puncture resistance on rough, technical terrain without the rim bottoming out against rocks and roots.
This is a wheelset built specifically for e-mountain bikes taking on aggressive, heavy-load terrain — not a general trail or cross-country wheel pressed into e-bike duty. For riders running a motor-assisted rig hard enough that a standard aluminum wheelset has started flexing, cracking spoke nipples, or going out of round, the E-Deemax S 27.5 is built from the ground up to handle exactly that kind of abuse.
