Lake MX169 Shoes Info

The Lake MX169 Shoes occupy a specific niche in Lake's off-road lineup: a comfort-first, lace-up MTB and commuter shoe built on the Comfort Plus Last — Lake's widest last — designed for riders who need a high-volume fit and all-day wearability over race-specific performance. At $169.99, it's Lake's option for mountain bikers, commuters, enduro tourers, and adventure cyclists who spend as much time on their feet as they do in the saddle.

The closure choice is deliberate. Lake chose laces over BOA or buckle systems specifically for the adjustability they provide — every eyelet is an independent adjustment point, letting you tighten or loosen different zones of the foot to match your exact foot shape. For a shoe built on the Comfort Plus Last — which already runs wider than nearly every other brand's Regular — the lacing system lets you fine-tune the fit precisely rather than compressing the foot uniformly from a single dial. A protective microfiber mesh panel over the toe box adds weatherproofing for mixed-condition riding, keeping the foot covered when trails get wet or dusty.

The Enduro sole is the other defining feature. Lake built it with real rubber on an EVA midsole with a semi-rigid, fiberglass-injected nylon base — the combination delivers exceptional off-bike traction for hike-a-bike sections, extended trail walks, and urban streets. It's SPD 2-bolt cleat compatible for clipped-in efficiency on the pedals, and it grips flat and cage pedals well without cleats — making it one of the few cycling shoes that transitions cleanly between both. Cleat caps are available separately to protect the sole when walking on hard surfaces.

Design Benefits

  1. Comfort Plus Last — Lake's widest fit. Built on the highest-volume last in Lake's lineup, the MX169 accommodates wide and high-instep feet that other brands' regular widths simply don't fit. If you've consistently sized up to get volume, this is the last for you.
  2. Lace closure for independent zone adjustment. Each eyelet is an independent tension point. Rather than a single dial that uniformly compresses the foot, laces let you tune the forefoot independently from the instep, the instep from the ankle — the most precision fit adjustment available in a cycling shoe, with no mechanical system to fail on a remote trail.
  3. Enduro rubber sole for maximum off-bike grip. The fiberglass-injected nylon base and real rubber tread combination handles extended hike-a-bike sections, urban commutes, and technical dismounts better than soles designed primarily for pedaling. Lake positions this as the highest off-bike traction sole in their MTB lineup.
  4. SPD and flat pedal compatible. SPD 2-bolt cleats clip in for efficiency on the pedals; the aggressive rubber tread grips flat and cage pedals without cleats. One shoe that covers both setups — useful for riders who switch between clipped-in trail riding and unclipped city use.

The RA Perspective

The MX169 is for a different kind of rider than most of the shoes in our Lake collection. The CX400 and MX239 are performance shoes with race-oriented lasts and stiff composite soles. The MX169 is a comfort shoe, a commuter shoe, an all-day shoe — and it fills that role with the same fit expertise Lake brings to everything they make.

The Comfort Plus Last is the widest last Lake offers. If you've found that even Lake's Competition Last shoes feel snug, or if you've consistently sized up in other brands to get enough volume through the forefoot, this is the last for you. The trade-off is that it's not optimized for high-cadence race performance — it's optimized for all-day comfort on varied terrain, and it delivers that well.

The lace closure is worth appreciating if you've only used BOA or ratchet buckles. Laces let you micro-adjust each zone of the shoe independently — tighter at the instep, more relaxed across the forefoot, however your specific foot needs it. Once you've tied them right for your foot shape, they stay there, and there's no mechanical system to fail on a remote trail.

The Enduro sole's compatibility with both SPD cleats and flat pedals makes it genuinely versatile. We recommend the Lake Comfort Plus Cleat Caps ($29.99, sold separately) if you're using it without cleats — they protect the sole on hard surfaces and improve walkability even further.

At $169.99, it's accessible. For riders who need maximum volume and all-day durability, there's very little competition at this price.
