HED Jet TC4 Track Wheelset Info
The HED Jet TC4 Track Wheelset brings HED's road-proven Jet rim technology to the velodrome, built at a 38mm depth that makes it the most versatile option in HED's Jet Track Series. Where the deeper TC6 and TC9 versions are built around pursuit and time trial speed, the TC4's shallower profile is close enough to a flat track wheel that riders can use one wheelset for both training and racing without switching setups.
HED builds the rim as a hybrid, an alloy rim base with a carbon aero fairing bonded to it, hooked for tire retention. That construction gives the wheel carbon's aero shaping at speed while keeping the reliability and predictable behavior of an alloy braking and structural surface, an approach HED carries over directly from its road Jet lineup rather than engineering something track-specific from scratch. The wheelset ships standard without a brake track, since it's built for fixed-gear track use and isn't compatible with rim brakes in that configuration.
Power transfer runs through HED's own track hub, a bolt-on design with a stout shell and high flanges that shorten spoke length and reduce flex under hard acceleration or a full-gas sprint, exactly where a track wheel is most likely to feel soft if it's underbuilt. The hub uses 6001-size stainless bearings, larger than what most track hubs run, which keeps rolling resistance low and lets the wheel spin freely under sustained load. Spokes are Sapim CX-Ray J-bend, laced in a 2-cross pattern for a stiff, direct connection between hub and rim. The front axle is a 9x1 100mm threaded fitting and the rear a 10x1 120mm threaded fitting, with 1.37-inch x 24tpi cog threading for a single fixed sprocket. Max tire pressure is rated to 80 psi.
Every Jet Track wheel is hand-laced and trued at HED's Roseville, Minnesota facility, the same build process the company has used since 1984, and it's backed by HED's 5-year warranty. One practical note worth knowing: HED specifically advises against hanging a bike equipped with Jet wheels from ceiling or wall hooks, since it can damage the carbon fairing in a way that isn't covered under warranty. For a track cyclist who wants a single wheelset that handles both hard training days and race day without the added weight or twitchiness of a deeper rim, the Jet TC4 covers that range well.
