HED Jet RC6 Performance Rim Brake Tubeless Wheelset Info

The HED Jet RC6 Performance Rim Brake Tubeless Wheelset is built for riders who still run rim brakes but don't want to give up aero performance or modern tire technology. It sits in the middle of HED's Jet RC Performance Series, a lineup that spans a 38mm climbing depth up through a 90mm race wheel, and the RC6 lands at 60mm — deep enough to hold speed on rolling and flat terrain without turning into a handful the moment the wind picks up.

What sets this wheelset apart is its hybrid construction. HED bonds a full carbon aero fairing to an anodized aluminum brake track, so you get the aerodynamic shape of a deep-section carbon rim with the predictable, fade-resistant braking of alloy. That matters most in the situations that expose carbon clinchers: long descents, wet weather, and hard, repeated braking in a fast group ride. There's no heat buildup to manage and no learning curve for brake pad compatibility — it stops the way an alloy rim always has, just faster through the air.

The rim itself carries forward HED's wide-rim design, measuring 21mm internal and 25mm external — a profile HED helped popularize in road cycling back in 2007, well before wide rims became the industry standard. That width supports a rounder tire profile and better casing support, and the rim comes factory-taped for tubeless setup, so switching to tubeless tires doesn't require sourcing separate tape or guessing at compatibility. HED also builds in its Stability Control shaping to manage crosswind buffeting at this depth, which is the tradeoff every rider considering a 60mm wheel has to weigh: enough rim to hold speed, not so much that a gusty exposed road turns into a fight to keep the bike tracking straight.

Hubs are HED's own Sonic series — Sonic 510 up front, Sonic 545 in the rear — running on radial sealed bearings, with bladed Sapim CX-Ray spokes lacing the wheel for a stiff, responsive build without excess weight. Freehub bodies are available in Shimano HG or SRAM XDR, covering current 11-speed road drivetrains. HED hand-builds these wheels in the USA rather than outsourcing to a generic overseas build house, which shows in how evenly the spoke tension holds up over time.

At $1,500, the Jet RC6 is aimed at the rider upgrading from a box-section alloy wheel who wants a genuine step up in aerodynamics and tubeless capability, but who isn't ready to move to disc brakes or spend twice as much on a full-carbon clincher. It's a strong match for road racing, triathlon, and structured training on a rim-brake bike you plan to keep riding hard for years to come.

The RA Perspective

We see a lot of riders holding onto rim-brake bikes they're not ready to retire, and the Jet RC6 is one of the better answers we've found for keeping those bikes competitive. The hybrid build — carbon fairing bonded to an alloy brake track — solves the actual problem rim-brake riders have with deep-section wheels, which is braking confidence on long descents. You get the aero shape without worrying about pad compatibility or heat buildup on a hot day in the mountains.

At 60mm, it's a genuine middle ground. Deep enough that you notice it holding speed on rolling terrain and in a fast paceline, but not so deep that it gets pushed around in exposed crosswinds the way a 90mm wheel can. Riders who've been nervous about going deep on a rim-brake bike tend to find the RC6 an easier adjustment than they expect.

The tubeless setup is straightforward since the tape is already applied at the factory, which saves the usual trial and error of finding compatible tape and getting a clean seal. Combined with the wide 21mm internal rim, tire volume and comfort are noticeably better than what most riders are coming off of with a stock alloy wheel.

Where this wheelset makes the most sense is for someone racing or training seriously on a rim-brake bike who wants a real performance upgrade without jumping to disc brakes or spending north of $2,500 on full carbon. It's not the lightest or the deepest wheel in HED's lineup, but it's a dependable, well-built option we'd point a rim-brake rider toward without hesitation.
