Cervelo Aspero Rival XPLR AXS Bike Info

Cervelo built their reputation on aerodynamics — their road and triathlon bikes are benchmarks for wind tunnel-developed precision, and the Cervelo Aspero Rival XPLR AXS Bike applies that same design discipline to gravel. The tagline is "Haul Ass, Not Cargo" — an explicit statement about what the Áspero is and isn't. This is not a bikepacking platform or an adventure-touring machine. It's a race-caliber gravel bike engineered to go fast on unpaved terrain, built around a carbon chassis with the geometry and tire clearance to handle rough ground without conceding the efficiency that Cervelo is known for.

T47a Bottom Bracket and Trail Mixer Fork

The Áspero's carbon frame uses Cervelo's T47a threaded bottom bracket — an asymmetric interface they developed on the R5-CX. The T47a shell delivers the wide stance and stiffness geometry of BBRight in a rider-serviceable threaded form, eliminating the press-fit creak and maintenance friction that affects most performance carbon frames. The frame ships with a UDH (Universal Derailleur Hanger) interface, which is forward-compatible with SRAM's Transmission drivetrain ecosystem and ensures the frame stays relevant as drivetrain standards continue to evolve. The fork uses Cervelo's Trail Mixer flip chip — a two-position adjustment that keeps the trail measurement consistent whether you're running 700c or 650b wheels. Change wheel sizes for a different terrain type and the handling character stays predictable; the bike doesn't suddenly feel unfamiliar at the front end. Internal cable routing runs the full length of the frame, and the headset and stem dimensions match Cervelo's R5 and Caledonia, which means you can spec an alternate cockpit using components already in the Cervelo lineup without hunting for compatibility.

Reserve Asymmetric Carbon Wheels

The wheelset is an asymmetric front/rear pair from Reserve: a 40mm-deep 40TA GR front wheel and a 44mm-deep 44TA GR rear, both laced to DT Swiss 370 hubs with thru-axle compatibility (12x100mm front, 12x142mm rear). The depth split is a deliberate engineering choice — the front wheel at 40mm prioritizes crosswind stability and steering precision where rider input is most consequential, while the 44mm rear wheel picks up aero return where the rim follows a more consistent path through the air. Both are tubeless compatible. WTB Vulpine TCS Light tires at 700x45 wrap both wheels, a 120tpi fast-rolling casing with dual-compound rubber and enough sidewall integrity for mixed-surface riding without the weight penalty of a heavier trail tire.

Rival XPLR AXS and Carbon Cockpit

The drivetrain is SRAM Rival XPLR AXS — wireless, 13-speed, gravel-specific. The XPLR cassette spans 10-46 with a 40T chainring, a range built for terrain that shifts between fast flat sections, rolling gravel, and steep loose climbs within the same ride. Rival AXS hydraulic disc brakes run SRAM Paceline Centerlock rotors front and rear, and the crankset is the Rival 1 AXS E1 on a SRAM DUB Wide T47 bottom bracket. The cockpit centers on Cervelo's AB09 carbon handlebar — a 31.8mm clamp bar with 16 degrees of outward flare at the drops. The flare widens the hand position on technical terrain and improves control when the front wheel tracks through loose material; it's a meaningful difference on sustained rough sections compared to a straight road bar. The Cervelo SP19 carbon seatpost at 27.2mm adds compliance through the seat junction, a small benefit over a stiffer 31.6mm post on longer days.

Cervelo included their own accessory ecosystem with the build: a front computer/accessory mount, a rear accessory mount, and a Smartpak top tube storage bag — useful additions that don't require sourcing third-party hardware. Available in Black/Charcoal and Marigold across six sizes from 48 to 61cm, the Áspero makes its priorities clear from the first pedal stroke. At $5,800 with Reserve carbon wheels, wireless shifting, and a carbon cockpit, it's a focused gravel bike from a brand that has never been interested in building something for everyone.

The RA Perspective

The Áspero is one of those bikes that tells you exactly what it is before you ride it. "Haul Ass, Not Cargo" isn't subtle, and neither is the bike. Cervelo built a road and triathlon reputation on precision and aerodynamics, and the Áspero applies that approach to gravel rather than softening it for wider appeal. If you want a bike that goes fast on gravel and transitions cleanly to road-like efficiency when the surface improves, this is the one. If you want mounts for bags, front rack compatibility, or a frame spec'd for bikepacking, look elsewhere — Cervelo doesn't pretend otherwise.

The Reserve asymmetric wheel pairing (40mm front, 44mm rear) is a detail worth noticing. Most wheelsets use identical depth front and rear for simplicity. Reserve and Cervelo made the call to use different depths for different jobs — the front wheel governs handling and crosswind feel, the rear wheel carries speed. It's the right call, and it reflects the attention to detail that runs through this bike's spec.

The Rival XPLR AXS 13-speed system is well-matched here. Wireless, gravel-specific gearing, 10-46 cassette range — it handles the demands of the terrain this bike is built for. We'd stack Rival against Force AXS for most riders and argue the real-world difference isn't worth the cost delta on an already well-equipped $5,800 build.

The T47a bottom bracket is worth calling out for anyone who's fought a creaking press-fit BB before. Threaded interface, BBRight geometry, rider-serviceable — it's a small thing that matters over thousands of kilometers.

Available in Black/Charcoal and Marigold. The Marigold is a standout colorway on this frame.
