HED Ardennes RA Performance Disc Brake Tubeless Wheelset Info

The HED Ardennes RA Performance Disc Brake Tubeless Wheelset carries the same all-road capability as HED's Ardennes RA Pro line at a more accessible price, earning its reputation as the workhorse of the HED stable. Built around the same go-anywhere philosophy that made the Ardennes name popular in the first place, this version trades some of the Pro tier's componentry for value without giving up the core ride quality and durability the Ardennes line is known for.

The rim is aluminum, with a 25mm depth, 21mm internal width, and 25mm external width — dimensions HED optimizes around a 28mm tire as the sweet spot for this wheelset. That's a slightly narrower target than the Pro tier's broader road-to-gravel range, positioning the RA Performance as a dedicated road and light all-road wheelset rather than one stretched toward serious gravel duty. The wheelset is built for disc brakes and tubeless tires, and tubeless setup here brings the usual benefits — better cornering grip, added comfort from running lower pressure, and stronger puncture resistance than a tubed tire on the same rim.

HED equips the RA Performance with its own Performance Hubs, tuned for smooth engagement at a lower price point than the Sonic hubs used on the Pro tier. The wheels run on 12x100mm front and 12x142mm rear thru-axles, and HED offers the freehub in Shimano HG, SRAM XDR, or Campagnolo Ekar to match whatever drivetrain a rider already has. Bladed steel spokes handle the load on both wheels, a straightforward and easily serviceable spoke choice rather than a specialty design that's harder to source a replacement for if something breaks on the road.

The complete wheelset weighs 1,575 grams — 710 grams up front and 865 grams in the rear — which is a reasonable weight for a wheel built to prioritize durability and value over shaving every gram. That weight distribution reflects the same practical engineering found across the Ardennes line: put the structure where the wheel actually needs it, rather than chasing a lighter number that comes at the cost of long-term reliability.

Built in the USA at HED's Minnesota facility, the Ardennes RA Performance is the right call for a rider who wants genuine Ardennes durability and all-road versatility but doesn't need the Pro tier's wider tire range or upgraded hubs. For daily training miles, club rides, and road-focused riding with the occasional rougher surface, this wheelset delivers dependable performance without the higher price tag of HED's top-tier alloy option.

The RA Perspective

The RA Performance is exactly what its name suggests — the practical, value-focused version of a wheel that's already proven itself over 15-plus years in the Ardennes line. HED didn't cut corners on the things that matter for durability; they simplified the hub and narrowed the tire focus to bring the price down, which is a smart way to make a good wheel more accessible rather than making a lesser one.

The 28mm optimal tire size is worth knowing before you buy. If you're mostly riding pavement with occasional rougher roads, that's the right target and this wheelset will feel great. If you're regularly running 32mm-plus tires for gravel, the Pro tier's wider intended range is probably the better fit — this isn't the wheelset built around that use case the way the Pro is.

Bladed steel spokes and a standard freehub selection (Shimano HG, SRAM XDR, or Campagnolo Ekar) mean this wheel is easy to service and easy to match to whatever bike you're building. That's a real advantage over more specialized wheels when something needs replacing down the line.

We'd point this wheelset at a rider who wants genuine HED Ardennes reliability for road and light all-road riding, and who'd rather put the money saved over the Pro tier toward tires, a fit session, or their next upgrade.
