Van Rysel RCR Rival AXS Bike Info

Van Rysel takes its name from the Flemish word for Lille — the northern French city where Decathlon's cycling brand built its identity, and where the Van Rysel RCR Rival AXS was developed. The RCR platform sits in the aero-light category: a road race bike built to minimize drag without paying a weight penalty, with a frame and fork built from RCR High Modulus Carbon and shaped through repeated sessions in the ONERA wind tunnel. ONERA is France's national aerospace research lab, and the collaboration — using computational fluid dynamics and 3D-printed prototypes — produced tube profiles that prioritize air management without the bulk of a dedicated aero platform. The result is a road bike that rides with the directness of a climber and the efficiency of a race machine.

The RCR carbon frame uses a geometry calibrated for road racing. Head tube angle runs 72° in the XS and 73° in sizes S through XL — precise and responsive without being aggressive. Chainstays are 410mm across the entire range: short enough to keep the rear end snappy without sacrificing stability. Stack figures run 515mm in the XS to 596mm in the XL, with reach spanning 382.5mm to 408.4mm. Stem lengths are sized per frame — 80mm in the XS up to 120mm in the XL — and the handlebar width scales from 40cm in the two smallest sizes to 44cm in the XL. That fit-from-the-factory approach is a Van Rysel design principle; the geometry table is worked out so you ride the bike without significant cockpit changes. The RCR Carbon 15mm offset seatpost keeps the fit adjustable without compromising the frame's intent.

The RCR-R platform is what Decathlon's CMA CGM WorldTour team races in its PRO form. The standard RCR — the bike sold here — shares the same frame architecture and wind-tunnel development. At $5,299 with SRAM Rival AXS E1 electronics and Van Rysel's own carbon wheels already in the build, the RCR sits at a price-to-specification point that's hard to find elsewhere in the aero-light category.

Drivetrain and Components

SRAM Rival AXS E1 handles shifting across a 2x12 setup with 48/35 chainrings and an SRAM XG-1250 10-36 cassette — a range that works from flat criteriums to sustained climbing without the extremes of a wide-range cassette. The crankset is SRAM Rival AXS E1 with an integrated power meter, which means accurate power data is standard equipment on this build, not an upgrade. Hydraulic disc brakes are SRAM Rival AXS E1 with 160mm rotors front and 140mm rear. Wheels are the Van Rysel VR 35 — 35mm carbon clinchers developed in-house and specced on the RCR to complement the frame's aerodynamic profile. Continental GP 5000 S TR tires in 700x28 come mounted; tubeless-ready from the factory. The handlebar is a Deda Superzero RS, and the stem is a Deda Van Rysel Superbox EVO — a semi-integrated design that manages cable routing cleanly without a fully integrated cockpit.

Design Benefits

  1. ONERA wind tunnel development — RCR High Modulus Carbon frame and fork shaped through CFD analysis and physical wind tunnel sessions at France's national aerospace lab, not generically aero-shaped tubing.
  2. Integrated power meter standard — SRAM Rival AXS E1 crankset includes a power meter in the base build, removing the need for an aftermarket upgrade at this price point.
  3. SRAM Rival AXS E1 wireless shifting — 2x12-speed electronic drivetrain with 48/35 chainrings and 10-36 cassette, covering road and climbing terrain without mechanical cable maintenance.
  4. Van Rysel VR 35 carbon wheels — 35mm carbon clinchers developed in-house to complement the RCR's aerodynamic profile; standard spec rather than an upgrade path.
  5. Continental GP 5000 S TR 700x28 — premium tubeless-ready race tire included as stock fitment, not a compromise tire requiring immediate replacement.
  6. 410mm chainstays across all sizes — uniform short rear center keeps the bike reactive and direct regardless of frame size.
  7. WorldTour-derived platform — the RCR shares its architecture with the RCR-R PRO raced by Decathlon CMA CGM in WorldTour competition.

The RCR Rival AXS is available in Snowy White in sizes XS through XL. It suits riders who want a race-oriented road bike with a complete, competition-ready build — wireless power-meter electronics, carbon wheels, and premium tires all at the same price as competitors who make you spec up separately. Van Rysel's approach has been to put the money into the parts you actually ride rather than the branding on the downtube.

The RA Perspective

Van Rysel is Decathlon's dedicated cycling brand, and that context matters for understanding what the RCR is. Decathlon has the buying power and in-house engineering capability to do things independently that most bike brands have to outsource — which is why they were able to partner with ONERA (the French national aerospace research lab) for wind tunnel development rather than contracting a smaller aerodynamics consultancy. The RCR is a genuine result of serious engineering, not a marketing claim.

The value story on this bike is real. SRAM Rival AXS E1 with an integrated power meter plus Van Rysel's own 35mm carbon wheels plus Continental GP 5000 S TR tires — all of that in one build at $5,299. Price out a comparable spec on a competitor's carbon frame and you're typically $1,000–1,500 higher before you touch the wheels or add power. Van Rysel's direct-to-consumer model and Decathlon's supply chain are doing something genuine here.

The Rival AXS E1 groupset is worth understanding clearly. It's Rival-level (one below Force), which means you're getting wireless electronic shifting and solid hydraulic braking at a price that makes the power meter crankset possible in this build. The shifts are reliable and the braking is excellent. What you're not getting is the marginal shift feel improvement of Force — which is a real but small difference that most riders won't encounter in their riding.

The Deda Superbox EVO stem is a semi-integrated design that keeps cables routed cleanly. It's not a fully slammed integrated cockpit, which actually makes home servicing more accessible.

Best for: riders who want a race-ready carbon road bike with complete electronics and carbon wheels without building the spec themselves.
