Buying Guide: Bike Wheels

Choosing the right bike wheels comes down to four variables: discipline, rim depth, material, and budget. For road riding, deeper rims deliver more aero efficiency on flat terrain — meaningful above around 25 mph — while shallower wheels are lighter and handle crosswinds better, making them the stronger choice for climbing. For gravel, 700c wheels favor speed and rolling efficiency; 650b allows wider tires for more traction on rougher surfaces. MTB wheels are spec’d by diameter — 29” is now standard for most XC and trail applications — and rim internal width, which affects tire volume and cornering feel.
