Mavic Cosmic Carbone 40 Tubular Wheelset Info
There aren’t too many sweeter memories than your first ride on a really top pair of carbon tubular wheels. If you want to be careful about choosing who will be your first time, make it a good one by going with the Mavic Cosmic Carbon 40 T wheelset.
The rim is made from 100% unidirectional carbon fiber. You can rely on consistent braking because the carbon brake track has been designed to work perfectly with the Mavic carbon brake pads delivered with the wheels. They have been specifically developed for Mavic’s carbon rim technology to ensure the most predictable braking regardless of weather conditions. If horror stories about how dreadfully carbon rims brake, push all those prejudices out of your mind because you won’t need to worry about it anymore. With a 40mm dish, you can look for the sort of aerodynamic advantage that you could never get from your 22mm Ksyriums, but without having to cast your fates to the winds with a deeper 60mm or even 80mm dish.
Both the front and rear hubs get the ultra-light treatment of having carbon shafts and aluminum flanges. The axles are made from aluminum, so that the lightweight factor is supported by very durable materials. Mavic uses their QRM+ bearing system as well. Super smooth rolling, the cartridge bearings are double sealed and sport a micro-adjustability system without having to remove the wheels from the bike. For the rear hub freewheel, Mavic employs what they call their FTS-L system, which is a lightweight method of securing the pawl to the hub body by using two stainless steel inserts. You may not be able to put your finger on it when you are riding, but the level of rolling efficiency this set-up provides will make these wheels roll so smoothly and effortlessly that you’ll feel like you hardly have to pedal.
To tie the whole package together, Mavic uses steel double-butted bladed spokes that are strait pulled to give the wheels the sort of extra strength that will see them capable of taking the sort of pounding they received at the 2011 where Johan Vansummeren rode them to victory at Paris-Roubaix. The brass nipples will securely hold the spokes, which count 16 radially laced on the front and 20 on the rear, where the non-drive side is also radially laced to keep the weight down, while the drive side has the strengthening crossed 2 lacing.
Confident that their Wheel Tire System (WTS) is the way of the future, Mavic has designed the Cosmic Carbon 40 T wheelset in conjunction with their proprietary tires in mind. It makes sense since the tire is the first thing to hit the air and touch the ground; so much of a wheel’s performance comes down to the rubber that wraps your hoops. Mavic has taken the guess work out of it by shipping the Mavic Cosmic Carbon 40 T with their Yksion Pro GripLink for the front wheel and the PowerLink tire for the rear. And yes, they are specific about which tire goes on which wheel. The front GripLink is designed especially to enhance grip and reduce the chances of having a flat. And for rainy weather, its tread is designed to evacuate water to prevent you from wiping out. The rear tire, while also having a high resistance to punctures due to the use of a nylon anti-puncture breaker, has been developed to offer excellent energy transfer, reduced rolling resistance and safe grip because of its tread pattern.
The Mavic Cosmic Carbon 40 T wheelset ship with BR601 quick releases, wheel bags, their carbon brake pads, and a multifunction adjustment wrench. Without tires, the wheels tip the scales at 1435 grams.
Mavic wheels come with a two-year warranty against defects. Mavic also has their MP3 Program. Short for Mavic Purchase Protection Plan, this is an extended coverage option. It is not required, but it is a cheap and cheerful way to buy some peace of mind—think crash insurance. You’ll need to buy MP3 through Mavic’s website within ten days of purchasing your wheels, so be certain to get onto the Mavic site soon after you place your wheel order to get the details. More information will be packaged with your wheels.
Whether you want to get the most out of your flatland rides, take your bike over some washboard back roads, or climb like a mountain goat in the Rockies, the Mavic Cosmic Carbon 40 T wheelset will answer all your adventurous goals.
