Lightweight Fernweg 60 Disc Clincher Wheelset Info
Lightweight’s Fernweg 60 Disc Clincher Wheelset goes places no other disc brake wheelset goes, something they can do because they’re made by Lightweight.
What’s most amazing about the wheels is that they can provide an incredibly aero low spoke count. They have 20 spokes in front, 20 in the rear. That’s the greatest wow of the wheels but the rest of the wheelset is equally impressive.
The 60mm deep shape is 20mm wide and has a blunt end on the spoke side to improve stability. The rim, as with all Lightweight rims, is designed for abuse. They’re expecting you’ll run 23-25mm wide tires for optimal aerodynamics, but you can go wider if you prefer more of a cushion. The exterior diameter is such that you should be able to install tires without tools, but they’ll stand up to abuse if you have to break out the tire levers.
Twenty spokes is low for a disc-brake wheel. Most have a minimum of 24 spokes. But Lightweight isn’t most. The 20 spokes go from the rim to the hub to the rim, as Lightweight wheels traditionally do. But the higher tension they can achieve makes the extra spokes unnecessary. Notice the extra pieces of carbon-fiber by where the spokes meet the rim. These are anchors that help strengthen the connection. The spokes are also wrapped in carbon-fiber where they cross over each other, like a traditional tied-and-soldered spoke meeting, only the material is carbon fiber, which is lighter and stronger. Fewer spokes is more aero, and four fewer spokes in front and four fewer in the rear is a major reduction in drag.
Disc brake rotors bring heat and torsion to hub bodies. These are traditionally bad things for hubs. But Lightweight has found a way to deal with the stresses. They created a new pentagonal hub shape. The spokes wrap around the hub for strength. The carbon fiber hub shell is mated with a pentagonal aluminum sleeve and epoxied together for both strength and heat dissipation. The disc rotor itself rides on a splined aluminum shelf designed for compatibility with CenterLock rotors. Lightweight designed the hub to work with 140-160mm rotor diameters.
The set weighs in at 815g for the front, 890g for the rear, making the total for the pair 1705g.
The hub itself can work with quick releases or thru axles. You specify when purchasing. With the quick-release version you get robust quick releases with the hubs. When you’re pulling for thru-axles, you can do 12mm or 15mm front and 135x12mm and 142x12mm for the rear. If your bike does quick release front and thru-axle rear or vice-versa, you can order that, too.
The wheels come with bags, valve extensions, tire levers, and owner’s manual. Lightweight specifies that the max system weight, rider and bike, is 100kg.
The Lightweight Fernweg 60 Disc Clincher adds speed and strength to your high-speed efforts.
